When I chose to re-design the book cover for the story of a drug-fueled murder, I knew I wanted to evoke something that was both sinister and exciting. Because the title evokes such strong imagery, I decided to use a decorative typeface as the focal point and build a minimal design around it.
I chose the Macula typeface for the title font because of its twisted depth perception. I added a gradient from pink to black on each letter so that the letters appear to be fading away.
I chose Helvetica Neue Bold for the author's name because it brings a solid weight to anchor the decorative Macula typeface.
I read through the book and jotted down words and short phrases that sparked an image for me.
I decided to go with the image of "spots in my eyes." I chose a black background paired with three colors - red for blood, white for light, and pink for partying. I skewed the white dots to create the effect of falling or spinning downwards.
